About

Purpose

The purpose of this blog is to get a story written. It is in my head and to distribute it and get feedback on it I simply need to try writing it down in some way. I want to learn two key things, first if I am able to write a story in a reasonably time efficient manner, secondly if there is any interest in reading the story at all. The end goal is to get the story written and entertain as many as possible.

Method

Having the full story written down in a book, or even a series of books would be the ultimate goal, however wishing for that to happen and not producing a single line of text has not been productive. The new approach is simply a way to cut down the massive undertaking into smaller pieces and the thinking is that it should be easier to get progress if at least a few words are written in some place.

The goal is to get at least a few paragraphs into a blog post, then another and then perhaps seeing if this can become the first chapter in the story. If this chapter is appreciated and the process is not to painful for me I'll continue to write, until I run out of motivation or imagination.

Language

I'm not a native speaker of English, I'm sure that there will be plenty of spelling mistakes and the language will probably not be very refined. I hope that I'll be able to keep writing at a decent pace since the story is fairly large already in my head and I will prioritize advancing the story over perfecting each part of it.

I still choose to write in English since the potential for feedback is much greater and with a bigger audience this hopefully helps achieving the goal to entertain many. Using a digital format also gives me hope that I can also choose to improve things later if needed.

Naming

I've quickly discovered how difficult naming of things can be. Unique names can really only be created using impossible combinations of characters which makes remembering them and reading them a hassle. Instead I choose to go with any name that pops up in my head unless the story behind the name itself has a specific meaning. This inevitably leads to names being inspired by something I've read, heard or a person I've met, because that seem to be how my brain works. However the characters in the story are fictional and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, in description or naming is purely coincidental.

Format

The format chosen (this blog) is simply a platform well known to me. I could postpone getting going by spending weeks or even months researching a better way to do it, but that would take precious time away from actually doing it. If this prototype is successful I may rework the format later, it might even become a book or something later. I really hope that this will not detract too much from the story and perhaps even be appreciated by some readers.

Inspiration

This story is heavily influenced by countless great authors, Stephen Donaldson, J.R.R. Tolkien, Guy Gavriel Kay, David Eddings, Robert Jordan, Steven Erikson and tabletop RPG's like Dungeons and Dragons, to name just a few. I do not claim to be very original, if you've read some of the books I've read you will recognize elements, concepts and principles for how the world works and characters in it. The goal isn't to introduce new elements although this might happen by coincidence.
